Chapter 7

“Sarah, follow the thread,” I said. My voice no longer shook as the pieces settled into place. “Dave claimed the cartel was using tracked snakes to locate this house. But this little beacon wasn’t hidden in a snake. It was stitched into Brutus’s collar with the same medical suture. The cartel didn’t plant it. Dave didn’t either.”

Sarah drew in a ragged breath. “Dad did.”

I nodded, moving nearer. “Arthur’s federal license was revoked years ago. The Vargas people believed he’d stolen their synthetic venom mixture to sell it himself. But he took it to ruin them, not profit from it. To bring the authorities down on the cartel, he had to expose the local route their contraband traveled.”

Evelyn came into view from the hall, still trembling. Maya stayed tucked behind her legs. “Did Arthur put my granddaughter in danger as bait?” she asked. Fury and fear tangled in her voice.

“No.” I glanced at the brass tag in my hand. “He made Brutus the shield and this house the snare. The tag is new, and the message scratched on it—THEY ARE COMING—was Arthur warning us. He knew a local cartel operative was here in the county. Brutus’s presence would draw that person out into the open.”

Sarah’s face went pale with recognition. “Dave. He was the county dog warden. His job let him transport exotic animals without raising suspicion. He had the equipment, the truck, and a reason to be in the woods watching us.”

“And Arthur counted on Dave going after the drive,” I said. “He sent you a counterfeit one so Dave would be tempted to take it.”

Evelyn’s voice rose. “But he has the drive, and Brutus is gone! How is that anything but a victory for them?”

“Because they took what we wanted them to take,” said a man from the front of the house.

We turned together. A stranger stood in the living-room opening, wearing a dark jacket marked DEA in bright yellow letters. Beyond him, red and blue flashes washed over the lawn from several unmarked federal vehicles, stretching wavering shadows across the windows.

“That was the plan,” he said, lowering his weapon as he entered the kitchen. Two armed agents passed behind him, checking the broken rear entrance and the yard beyond it.

He displayed his badge. “Agent Harris. I’m sorry we weren’t here sooner. Township police communications were jammed, and separating the collar from Brutus disrupted our primary signal. It took extra time to locate the backup.”

Sarah drew Maya close against her side. “Backup? You’ve been following Brutus?”

Harris gave us a grave but steady look. “Federal teams have tracked Brutus, his collar, and the drive since they crossed into Florida. Arthur Vance has worked as a confidential DEA informant for eighteen months. He didn’t walk away from you to join the Vargas cartel, Sarah. He went inside to bring it down.”

Evelyn covered her mouth. For a moment, no one spoke.

“The Vargas operation uses exotic-animal shipments to move drugs and disguise its money,” Harris said, taking in the wrecked kitchen. “They have resources, and they know how to hide. If Arthur had given us only the venom formula, they could have killed him, moved the lab, and continued somewhere else. He needed proof of the network carrying their product. He needed the people managing it caught.”

“That’s why he sent Brutus,” I said. Wonder slipped into my voice despite the broken glass around us.

Harris nodded. “Arthur trained that mastiff himself. Brutus wasn’t only there to guard your family. He was a living decoy. Dave and his crew broke in and took the flash drive, believing it held the cartel’s valuable formula. Instead, the drive contains an encrypted federal tracking device. It’s sending our teams the SUV’s location, its speed, and audio.”

Maya’s eyes shone with tears. “They took Brutus. They hurt him. They tied that rope so tightly.”

Harris bent until he was level with her. His expression softened. “Brutus is brave, Maya, and he knows how to protect himself. The men who took him are driving straight toward a federal trap.”

A burst of static snapped from Harris’s radio. He turned toward it as a voice began to report from the team pursuing Dave’s vehicle.
