Chapter 8

“Alpha Team checking in with Command. The SUV is secured on Interstate 71. We have four suspects in custody, and Brutus is here beside us.”

The report seemed to loosen the tight knot that had held the kitchen together. Sarah dropped into a chair and drew Maya onto her lap, burying her face in her daughter’s hair.

For a few seconds, she could only hold on. Then the tears she had fought to contain slipped free, dampening Maya’s hair as she rocked her gently.

Evelyn braced herself against the counter. Her eyes closed, and her grip eased. The hard lines around her mouth softened while old fear and resentment slowly began to drain away.

“Dave’s been caught,” I said under my breath. The words sounded almost too simple for the terror that had brought us to this moment.

Harris stood, his expression steady. “Every piece of the local network has been picked up. The recording on the drive Dave stole catches Vargas ordering the attack on this house.”

His gaze moved among us, giving each of us time to take in the news. “There’s more. The Florida lab is next.”

“Agents will raid it,” he continued. “The Vargas family’s operation is going to be broken apart. They won’t be able to keep running things the way they have.”

Sarah lifted her face from Maya’s hair. Tears still shone on her cheeks, but now her attention fixed on Harris. “And my father? Do you know whether Arthur is safe?”

Harris nodded once. “He has been under federal protection since yesterday morning. When he realized Dave had taken the bait and was on his way here, we moved him somewhere secure.”

Sarah hugged Maya a little closer, as if she needed to feel the answer rather than simply hear it. “So nothing happened to him?”

“He’s safe,” Harris assured her. “He also asked me to pass along something for you.”

Sarah wiped at her cheeks with the heel of her hand. Her voice was quiet when she asked, “What did he want you to tell me?”

“He’s sorry he missed five of your birthdays,” Harris said gently. “He wants Maya to have a big yard for Brutus, too, if you’re willing to give him a home.”

A laugh escaped Sarah, fragile and wavering, caught between relief and grief. Maya looked up from her mother, hope brightening her face. “Does that mean the big dog can stay with us?”

“If that’s what your family wants,” Harris answered. “Brutus can leave federal service now. He’s allowed to retire and live here with you.”

Afterward, the hours ran together: flashing lights, questions asked more than once, and investigators moving carefully through the aftermath. Medics located Officer Miller in the trunk of his cruiser.

He was unconscious, just as Dave had left him, but the examination found no injuries. The news brought another small measure of relief to a night that had offered very little.

Township officers blocked off the street as the DEA gathered evidence and documented each part of the scene. The cobra and shards of broken glass were collected among the items they logged.

By dawn, a thin wash of light had spread over the Ohio tree line. Dew turned the grass a faint gold, and the street outside the house had grown still.

I stood near the porch when tires crunched along the drive. A dark federal transport van came into view, rolled up to the house, and stopped.

Harris climbed down and walked to the rear doors. When he swung them open, Brutus carefully stepped from the van onto the gravel.

He was still an enormous dog, with tawny fur, old scars, and shoulders that made him seem almost too large for the morning. Then he noticed Maya on the porch in her pajamas.

His ears perked up. His tail moved slowly from side to side as he crossed the lawn. At the steps, he paused and rested his broad chin on the lowest board, making a soft sound in his throat.

Maya hurried down and flung her arms around his neck. Brutus bowed his head into her embrace and shut his eyes while she pressed her cheek against his thick coat.

Sarah stood beside me, tears on her face. She found my hand and squeezed it. In the new daylight, neither of us needed to explain what we were feeling.

Arthur Vance had given up his reputation, his family, and his freedom to enter the Vargas organization and help destroy it. He had trusted Brutus to guard Sarah and Maya when danger came.

I noticed the brass tag on the porch rail. Its worn surface still carried the warning: THEY ARE COMING. But the danger it promised had reached us and passed.

Maya held Brutus close, while Sarah’s hand stayed clasped in mine. The threat had ended. Brutus was back with his family, and the sight of them together was the only answer we needed.

The end.
