Chapter 5

A photograph was attached to Lily’s record. She looked smaller there, perhaps only three, pressed against a featureless white backdrop while tears streaked down her cheeks.

Next to the image sat a field marked CLIENT DESTINATION.

I read it expecting a foreign magnate, a bought politician, or one of the invisible corporations that existed only in tax havens.

What appeared instead struck me harder than any bullet ever could.

Buyer: THE CROSS ESTATE.

My lungs locked. For one savage moment, breathing became impossible.

The Cross Estate was my family’s mountain fortress, the vast ancestral property I believed had stood sealed and abandoned since my parents’ deaths.

That belief had been a lie.

My childhood home had become a delivery point for stolen children. Someone had hijacked my company, my wealth, even my biometric credentials, and built an invisible kingdom of horror beneath my sight.

Then the penthouse lights stuttered overhead.

The isolated laptop remained unchanged, but the primary desktop across the desk snapped awake from sleep.

Its monitors flared white enough to hurt my eyes before dropping into absolute black.

A crimson progress indicator appeared at the center of the display.

SYSTEM PURGE INITIATED. OVERRIDE: R. STERLING.

Richard was erasing my systems from somewhere outside the tower. He knew I possessed the drive. He knew Lily was with me. He intended to leave me beside a trafficked child with every corporate record erased.

This was more than damage control. He was constructing my prison.

My phone began hammering against my pocket. Marcus.

I answered without taking my stare from the red bar. “Marcus, Richard Sterling has started deleting the mainframe.”

“I see it. I’m holding him at the firewalls right now,” Marcus shouted, alarms screaming behind him in his security command center. “But Damon, we have a bigger emergency. Tower perimeter alerts just went live. Three dark SUVs forced their way into the underground garage and neutralized the gate team.”

“Elisa’s people?”

“No. Worse.” His voice sank. “Police tactical. Someone reported that you abducted a child from the gala.”

They were coming for my penthouse.

Once they got inside, they would discover Lily. They would scan the code burned into her skin. Then they would follow the manufactured digital evidence straight to me.

“Damon,” Marcus said, shouting now. “They’re riding up in the elevator. Ninety seconds, maybe less, before they breach your doors.”

My private elevator’s steel entrance jolted under a violent blow.

The next hit boomed through the apartment like a battering ram attacking a vault. Then a breaching charge detonated, shivering the floor, rattling crystal at the bar, and exploding the skyline windows into glittering shards.

“First barrier is gone!” Marcus bellowed through the phone, nearly drowned out by his alarms. “You have under twenty seconds before they hit the living room. Move.”

I gave him no reply. I crammed the encrypted laptop into a waterproof tactical case, snatched the titanium thumb drive, and ran for the master bathroom.

Lily had not moved from the rug. The blast had not drawn a scream from her. She had only folded tighter beneath my suit jacket, hidden under it like a small animal sheltering from a storm.

She had learned what violence sounded like. To her, the world was supposed to be thunderous, merciless, and waiting to hurt her.

“Lily, eyes on me,” I said, dropping beside her and easing the jacket away from her face. Her empty gaze found mine. “We’re leaving. It will be dark, and you must stay silent. Can you do that for me?”

She answered with one quick, frightened nod.

I lifted her into my left arm. Her frail arms cinched around my neck, and she buried her face against my shoulder with a grip born of pure desperation.

I carried her into the enormous glass shower. Above me, behind the chrome faceplate of the rainfall fixture, my fingertips located the concealed biometric reader. I set my thumb against the icy metal.

Green light blinked once.

The rear shower wall, flawless Italian marble and nearly two tons of it, released with a soft mechanical hiss. It shifted sideways, exposing a reinforced maintenance passage filled with blackness.

My father had built this tower twenty-five years earlier. Brilliant, suspicious, and incapable of trusting anyone, he had hidden a personal escape route in its structural core, one that bypassed the floors and descended into utility tunnels beneath the city bedrock.

I stepped into the unlit shaft with Lily and pressed the emergency seal control.

The marble shower wall slid closed behind Lily and me as wood shattered and tactical boots stormed into my bedroom, SWAT searching the penthouse.
