Chapter 6

The shaft closed around us like a buried vein inside the tower. Dust coated my tongue, and the cramped air carried the sharp stink of old wiring and hot metal.

I snapped on the tiny light attached to my keys. Its thin white beam found the vertical ladder disappearing beneath our feet.

"Don’t let go, Lily," I breathed.

I wedged one arm through the ladder and held her tightly against me as I started down. The tactical bag dragged at my back, shifting my balance with every rung.

Pain tore through my shoulders, but stopping was impossible. If the team upstairs located the shower’s hidden scanner, they could fill this passage with explosives before we reached safety.

We descended without speaking, swallowed by the inner bones of the skyscraper. Lily’s breath fluttered against my throat, quick and frightened, yet she gave them nothing to hear.

At last, my shoes struck solid concrete on the underground utility floor.

I forced open a heavy emergency door and stepped into a cavernous service chamber. Water pipes crowded the walls, while electrical cabinets hummed in the darkness.

Far across the room, my armored Maybach blinked its headlights twice.

Thomas stood beside its open rear door in his immaculate suit, a suppressed weapon resting ready in his hands. Neither the police breach nor the grime covering me seemed to surprise him.

"The upper garage is sealed, sir," he said as I placed Lily in the rear seat. "They missed the utility route, though. We have three minutes before the city system notices this car."

I threw the tactical bag beside Lily. "Shut off the transponder. GPS too. Satellite connection. Everything."

"It’s already dark, sir."

I got in beside Lily, and Thomas sealed us inside the Maybach’s armored silence. He took the wheel, left the lamps off, and drove hard.

The engine growled low as we raced through the black service tunnel. Thomas followed only the weak green glow of emergency signs fixed along the concrete.

We surged up a concealed ramp masked as a municipal maintenance depot and slipped into downtown traffic, rain shimmering across the streets.

Four patrol cars tore past in the other direction, sirens ripping through the night as they rushed toward my tower.

Air left my lungs in one ragged release. I leaned back against the leather, but relief never reached me.

I pulled the encrypted laptop from the bag and set it across my knees. Then I inserted the titanium drive again.

"Marcus," I said, opening the protected connection through the car’s system. "We made it out. We’re moving."

His voice arrived through the speakers, strained with urgency. "Thank God. My situation just became catastrophic. Richard Sterling didn’t only erase the company records, Damon. He erased you."

I watched the screen flicker. "Tell me exactly what happened."

"Your access credentials are gone. Biometrics, corporate codes, all of it. Three minutes ago, he drained your offshore accounts into decentralized ghost ledgers. More than four billion dollars vanished. And the FBI issued an Amber Alert a minute ago saying you kidnapped Lily from the gala during a breakdown."

Ice spread through my blood. Richard was not merely protecting his operation. He was cutting me out of the world completely.

Richard Sterling, Cross Logistics COO and my father’s old friend, had turned every resource tied to my name into armor for himself. I saw the shape of the answer and mistook it for certainty.

"He’s behind it," I said, keeping my voice flat. "He used Cross Logistics and my identity to hide the trafficking. Now Lily has exposed him, so he’s destroying me with the evidence."

"That theory tracks," Marcus replied, keys hammering in the background. "I cracked the second firewall on the thumb drive. That ledger is an export manifest, not just a list. CR-7402 is included, and the transfer is tonight."

Lily watched the blue pulse on my laptop, both hands twisted in the fabric of my jacket. I looked down at her, then back at the screen. "Where are they taking them?"

"The coordinates lead to the Cross Estate," Marcus said. "North ridge, at the old hunting lodge. A private helicopter is due there at two in the morning, and it will carry the children beyond international waters."

The children who remained were scheduled to be exported from the Cross Estate that same night.
