The Brake Line Cut

Miller’s expression changed as Julian kept pointing at me. The patient look he’d worn a moment before hardened into something watchful and exact.
“So your account is that Eli found the real tool, took it away, substituted this one, and let us search your SUV without saying a word?” Miller asked. His voice had gone flat.
“He’s covering for Maya!” Julian shouted. His finger shook as he aimed it at my chest. “They planned this together!”
Miller studied him for a beat. “Then explain something. If you didn’t know what was inside that cloth, how did you know a tool had been put there?”
Julian’s jaw closed. His face had been full of certainty; now it looked as if he’d run out of room to breathe.
“I only meant—” He faltered, then tried again. “I knew she’d borrowed red snips. I saw the handles and figured that was what they were.”
Officer Davis came around the SUV’s back corner, holding the small red-handled item up for everyone to see. “You didn’t say you figured, Mr. Reed. You identified it as Maya’s borrowed tool before I examined it.”
He turned the decoy beneath the fluorescent lights. “These are wire strippers. They won’t cut a reinforced brake line. You knew there was another tool wrapped in that cloth because you put it there.”
Julian shuffled back, his fine shoes squeaking against the shop floor. He looked from Davis to Miller, then fixed his glare on me. Hatred had stripped away the rest of his expression.
“This is ridiculous,” he said, pulling himself upright. “I’m the one someone tried to kill. Get a warrant and search Eli’s office. If you don’t lock this place down, my attorney will make sure you regret it.”
I let my arms fall and moved toward the middle of the bay, keeping myself between Julian and the officers. I wasn’t going to let him close the distance while he was this angry.
“You don’t need a warrant for my shop, Officer Miller,” I said. “There’s a floor safe beneath my desk. I’ll give you the combination.”
“The real aviation snips are inside,” I continued. “The steel jaws have new marks on them. Maya may have left fingerprints on the rubber grips when she used them in her garden a couple of weeks ago.”
Julian’s shoulders lifted, and a flash of satisfaction crossed his face. “You heard him. He’s admitted he tampered with evidence.”
I kept my eyes on Miller. “I locked those snips away because I knew Julian had planted the decoy. The story about his brakes failing on Oak Hill was staged.”
I walked over to the workbench and opened my laptop. “He cut his own brake line in his garage. Then he put fluid on the floor so Maya would think the SUV had a leak, and arranged for it to be towed safely to my shop.”
“That’s a lie!” Julian yelled. He lunged toward me, but Davis moved in front of him and planted a solid hand against his chest.
“Stay where you are,” Davis ordered. “Don’t come any closer.”
Julian strained against the officer’s arm. “He’s inventing all of this!” The crack in his voice was sharper than the shout.
“Am I?” I turned the laptop so Miller and Davis could see the screen, then pressed the key to start the file.
The quiet garage filled with sound from Julian’s own dashcam. First came the scrape of clothing, then a heavy shift as someone settled into the driver’s seat.
Julian’s recorded voice followed, composed and businesslike. “It’s taken care of. I left fluid on the floor so she’d buy it. The tow truck’s coming.”
Julian stopped moving. The color drained from his face as he stared at the laptop. Davis kept hold of him while the recording played on.
“I’m not worried if Eli catches on,” Julian’s voice continued. “That actually helps. Once he confronts her about the tool, I’ll step in. I’ve already written my lawyer about her ‘erratic behavior.’”
The voice on the recording paused only long enough to make each next word clear. “Then I’ll have the police find the snips under the spare tire. I want them to ask for a psychiatric evaluation. After that, I get custody, and Maya loses control of her assets.”
I didn’t touch the keyboard. The recording exposed Julian’s plan in his own voice, leaving him silent as the evidence played.
