The Blood Beneath the Kitchen Table

“Clara was wiping up the coffee because she was afraid he’d get angry again,” Brenda said, rushing through the explanation. “When I heard the front door, I panicked. I acted as if I was scolding her. I needed him to think I was in control, so he wouldn’t hurt her.”
I turned my gaze toward Clara.
She sat curled around her legs, her eyes fixed on the wall as if she couldn’t see us.
“Those marks on her arms,” I said. My chest felt too tight to draw a full breath. “Someone grabbed her.”
Brenda gave a shaky nod and dragged her sleeve across her nose. “She tried to get out through the back door two days ago. He caught her, hauled her back, and shoved her beneath the kitchen table. Then he raked his nails along the baseboard and told her he’d do the same to her face if she tried again.”
My sight narrowed. Anger surged through me, fierce and immediate, swallowing the disbelief that had held me still.
What I had believed I saw when I came home was not what had happened.
Brenda hadn’t been hurting Clara. She had been acting out a cruel scene to keep our daughter safe from the man hiding under our roof.
The thick sliding bolt mounted outside Clara’s bedroom had never been there to trap her.
It was there to keep him out while Brenda and Clara slept.
“He’s in the basement now?” I asked. My voice sounded steady, but I could feel the violence waiting beneath it.
Brenda lowered her chin and nodded. “He was down there when you came in. But, Dave, sound carries through the floor. He can hear us talking.”
I glanced toward the ragged opening at the back of the closet. Beyond it, the narrow space beside the pipes descended into the basement’s utility room.
He hadn’t scratched at the wall to frighten Clara.
He’d been letting me know he’d heard me come inside.
My phone shuddered against my leg without warning.
The vibration startled Brenda and Clara. Both of them flinched as I pulled the device from my pocket and checked the display.
No name appeared, only a number I didn’t recognize.
I silenced the phone. Almost immediately, a new message appeared.
There was nothing written in it. One image filled the screen.
My breath stopped short.
The photograph showed me from behind.
I was at the entrance to the house, my duffel hanging from my left shoulder as I looked toward Brenda and Clara in the kitchen.
The camera had been above me, at the top of the stairs.
He hadn’t stayed below us.
He’d been close behind me when I came through the front door.
I lifted my eyes from the screen, my pulse pounding hard enough to hurt.
“Brenda,” I murmured, quietly drawing the folding knife from my pocket. “Take Clara into the bathroom. Lock yourselves in. Whatever you hear, stay there.”
“Dave, what happened?” Brenda asked. Her face tightened with fresh fear.
I was about to answer when a work boot landed heavily on the hallway floor, right outside the bedroom.
Someone was on the other side of the door.
A moment later, the outside bolt crashed into place with a hard metallic slam.
The sound rang through the room, sharp and final.
None of us moved at first. The air seemed to close around us, pressing the breath from my lungs. Then boots began retreating along the hall, measured and unhurried, heading away from the bedroom.
I didn’t shout or strike the door. I knew what it could take. After a break-in nearby the year before, I’d replaced the flimsy old door with solid oak.
Brenda sank onto the edge of Clara’s bed and pulled our frightened daughter against her.
I held the knife tight and kept my voice low. “How did he slide that bolt from outside? Brenda, tell me how.”
Her eyes darted around the room. “He sees everything. Maybe he watched me put it up. Dave, he can get through the whole house.”
I turned toward the closet, toward the torn drywall and the black space behind it.
“He’s going down again,” I said, mapping the house in my head. “The front entrance is at the bottom of the stairs, but he isn’t trying to leave. He wants us scared and waiting.”
I picked up the tactical flashlight from the carpet and switched it on. Its beam burned across the room.
The bedroom was bolted shut from the outside. The intruder was loose somewhere in the house.
I decided I would go down through the wall.
