Evicted by the Pregnant Other Woman

Eric had no clue that the two women he trusted most might be preparing to vanish with five hundred thousand dollars, abandoning him beside a failing business and the wreckage of our marriage.
“Nora,” Lily said, her voice low and careful. “If Doreen and Paige already moved that half-million offshore, why would Doreen email you this morning? Why offer ten thousand dollars, then threaten you with the Apex theft?”
My pacing stopped cold.
Lily had found the flaw I had missed.
If Doreen had truly finished her plan, she would not still be reaching for me. She would be packing, hiding, disappearing before the damage caught up with her.
That email had not been a triumph. It had been fear dressed up as a threat.
I hurried to the laptop and reopened Doreen’s message. The timestamp glared from the screen: 8:45 that morning.
Then I accessed the Elegant Occasions cloud activity records.
The company server tracked every registered thumb drive whenever it connected to a computer. It recorded the device, the address, and the precise time.
I searched for the blue drive.
The one I always carried in my purse. The one I believed Doreen had lifted while Paige had my hair twisted in her fist.
The results appeared almost immediately.
Device: Admin_Drive_Blue.
Most Recent Sync: Thursday, October 14, 4:30 PM.
My entire body went still as the meaning sank in.
Thursday.
They had forced me out on Sunday afternoon. Doreen had supposedly taken the blue drive from my handbag on Sunday.
Yet the system said that drive had not connected anywhere since Thursday.
My purse sat beside Lily’s kitchen island where I had dropped it earlier. I grabbed it, unzipped the inner compartment, and dug through it with shaking hands.
My fingertips skimmed the cloth pocket. Then they struck something solid and smooth.
I drew out a blue thumb drive and held it in my palm.
It was mine.
Air caught in my throat. I set the drive on the counter with the caution I might have used for a live explosive.
If my own blue drive had remained in my purse, what had I seen sticking from Doreen’s pocket yesterday?
I shut my eyes, and the eviction came back in broken flashes. Paige shouting. My scalp burning as she yanked me. An orange rolling across the floor. Mrs. Alvarez filling the doorway. Doreen tossing my bag outside.
“Make sure you take this,” she had said. “I don’t want you inventing excuses to return.”
Doreen had not stolen anything from me.
She had slipped another drive into my bag.
I connected my genuine drive to Lily’s laptop. Its familiar folders opened at once: staff schedules, payroll files, and the untouched financial history of Elegant Occasions.
The authentic records were still there, exactly as I had maintained them.
I studied the loan paperwork on the screen, then the offshore transfers listed beneath Doreen’s and Paige’s names.
The truth shifted beneath me, rearranging every assumption I had made.
Doreen had not designed those loans. She had not partnered with Paige to build an offshore escape route.
The digital signatures on the five-hundred-thousand-dollar loans belonged to Doreen and me. I knew with absolute certainty that my signature was counterfeit.
So Doreen’s had to be counterfeit as well.
Eric was not his mother’s clueless victim. Eric had been deceiving everyone. He had used Paige’s name to trap both women in the story he needed told.
He planned to bleed Doreen dry, take her home when the debt crushed her, and leave me carrying the blame for the company theft.
Paige’s supposed offshore role gave him the perfect narrative: a mistress turned accomplice, a mother turned co-signer, and a wife turned criminal mastermind.
My gaze returned to the unfamiliar blue drive on the granite counter.
I knew what it contained before I opened it. Not the real books, but Eric’s manufactured case against us. Doreen had unknowingly sent his weapon away with me when she threw me out.
“He manipulated every one of us,” I whispered. The scope of it pressed against my chest until breathing hurt.
Lily backed away from the island, staring at the little plastic device. “If that thing is his evidence, what did he put on it?”
“We’re about to see,” I said. My hands still trembled, but the terror inside me had hardened into something colder. I plugged the planted drive into the laptop.
One folder appeared on the screen: Archive_Backup.
Inside sat a carefully assembled prosecution file. There were images of transfers wired to Apex Management Solutions, PDF loan contracts bearing forged versions of Doreen’s signature and mine, and fake email exchanges between Paige and me about draining company funds and concealing them overseas.
“It tells a whole story,” Lily said over my shoulder. “You are the architect, Doreen is the innocent person tricked into signing, and Paige is helping you. But why would Eric hand this to Doreen and make her put it in your purse?”
“The deadline was five o’clock,” I said, as the final pieces locked together. “Eric told Doreen I had stolen fifty thousand dollars. He claimed this drive held my confession, then convinced her to plant it during the fight so I would leave carrying the proof.”
Lily’s brow furrowed. “But if Eric wanted you arrested, why would he give you evidence that could put you in jail?”
