Chapter 3

“That’s correct,” Sarah said softly. “His identification was in order. But there was someone with him.” She glanced toward the lobby before lowering her voice. “A blonde woman. She kept urging him to hurry. I’m sorry, Nora.”

Paige. Of course it had been Paige.

While I sat beneath fluorescent lights at urgent care, documenting the swelling in my scalp after they drove me from my own house, Eric had stood at this bank with his pregnant mistress and emptied eleven years of sacrifice. They had taken our savings as calmly as if it had always belonged to them.

I left the bank feeling detached from my own body. Outside, the sun beat down on the pavement with cruel brightness, and I fumbled for my car keys as my phone vibrated in my pocket.

An email had arrived from Doreen. There was no subject line, which somehow made it feel even more ominous.

Eric had told her about my supposedly irrational conduct the day before, she wrote. Then came her offer: ten thousand dollars if I signed a separation agreement before five o’clock, surrendering every interest I had in the house and Elegant Occasions.

The message did not stop there. If I declined, Doreen said she would deliver proof of my alleged theft from Apex to law enforcement. If I caused trouble, she would make certain the authorities heard about it.

A PDF waited beneath the email: a waiver dressed up in legal language, designed to strip me of my home, my work, and any right to challenge what they had done.

I slid into the driver’s seat and read Doreen’s words again. They believed they had reduced me to nothing. My money was gone, my marriage was a lie, and my name had been planted across fraudulent records.

They expected fear to do the rest. They expected me to sign whatever they placed in front of me and disappear quietly while Eric and Paige built a future from the ruins of mine.

But Doreen had handed me something valuable. Her demand was written down, timestamped, and impossible to deny. She had documented an extortion attempt with her own fingers.

I started the car, ready to get to Lily’s house and show her every word. Before I could reverse, a polished black SUV swung in behind me and stopped so close that my bumper had nowhere to go.

My stomach clenched. I recognized that SUV before the driver’s door even opened.

Eric emerged in his tailored suit, straightening his jacket as though he had come to a business meeting rather than corner his wife in a parking lot. That relaxed, superior smile sat on his face like he had already won.

He crossed to my door and knocked against the glass. His wedding band made a hard, metallic sound that turned my skin cold.

“Open the window, Nora,” he said through the glass. “We should discuss what happens next.”

For eleven years, I would have obeyed automatically. I had spent our entire marriage absorbing his moods, preventing scenes, and making excuses for the anger he called ambition. That woman was gone.

I lowered the window only enough for us to hear each other. “You have thirty seconds before I call the police and tell them you’re harassing me.”

Eric gave a small laugh and braced his arms against the top of my door. Under the glaring morning light, he looked perfectly at ease.

“No need to make this ugly,” he said. “I’m trying to help. Did you read my mother’s email?”

“The email where she offers ten thousand dollars for rights worth far more than that?” I asked. “Yes. I read the threat too. It is extortion, Eric.”

“It is your way out,” he replied, the warmth draining from his expression. “Yesterday, you left the house and attacked a pregnant woman in front of a witness. Mrs. Alvarez saw you yank Paige’s hair. We have pictures of the marks you left on her.”

“Paige came after me,” I said. “I defended myself, and urgent care recorded what she did to my head.”

He flicked his hand as if my evidence was dust. “Competing stories won’t matter. What will matter is corporate espionage. Mom’s accountant found the Apex transfers this morning. Large sums left Elegant Occasions for a shell company, authorized with your digital signature.”

He bent closer, his eyes turning flat and dark. “Your name is on the electronic approvals, Nora. It looks like embezzlement. Refuse to sign by five, and Mom takes those files to the district attorney. You could spend years in a federal prison.”

I let my face fall, though every part of me was listening. He spoke with the certainty of a man who thought he had sealed every exit.

“So that is why you took our money?” I asked, making my voice shake. “You closed the accounts to leave me unable to fight you?”

“I protected my assets from a hostile partner,” Eric said, adjusting his cuff as if he had answered a routine question. “Seventy thousand is insignificant beside what you stole. Sign the agreement, accept the ten thousand, and make a new life somewhere else. You won’t see a better offer.”

He tapped the roof of my car twice, then returned to the SUV. I stayed still until he drove away and the black vehicle vanished beyond the lot entrance.

Only then did I breathe. Adrenaline tore through me, tangled with a rage so fierce it made my hands tremble on the wheel. Eric believed he had frightened me into surrender, but he had just given me more than he realized.

I drove to Lily’s house consumed by one thought. Eric had made a major mistake: he had mentioned the Apex transfers, but not the much larger loans.
